Budwig Diet

Updated: Mar 11, 2021

The Budwig diet was introduced by Dr Johanna Budwig. She was a German biochemist, pharmacist and author. She also held doctorate degrees in physics and chemistry. She was believed to be one of the world’s leading authority in fats and oils and based on her research she developed a diet for the treatment of cancer called the Budwig diet in the 1950s.

She believed that the occurrence of cancer was due to the deficiency in unsaturated fat. These unsaturated fats mainly included linoleic acid and linolenic acid. They are essential for the aerobic respiration and the formation of the cell membrane in a cell and the deficiency of the vital ingredients caused cancerous cells. She said “The formation of tumors usually happens as follows. In those body areas which normally host many growth processes, such as in the skin and membranes, the glandular organs, for example, the liver and pancreas or the glands in the stomach and intestinal tract — it is here that the growth processes are brought to a standstill. Because the polarity is missing, due to lack of electron-rich highly unsaturated fat, the course of growth is disturbed — the surface-active fats are not present; the substance becomes inactive before maturing and shedding process of the cells ever take place, which results in the formation of tumors.”

Flax seed oil is found to be rich in linoleic acid and linolenic acid. Therefore, she proposed the use of flaxseed oil in diet. The blood is a water based medium thus the transport of oil through blood to the cells was found to be difficult. Dr. Budwig found out that the union of flax seed oil with cottage cheese made the mixture more hydrophilic and could directly enter the cell for focused electron transportation. The therapeutic electron rich unsaturated fats of the flax seed oil in combination with abundance of Sulphur protein in cottage cheese made the basis of the Budwig diet.

Other than certain types of cancer it is also claimed to be effective for cardiovascular diseases, stomach ulcers, eczema, arthritis immune deficiencies etc.

The Budwig diet apart from the flax seed oil and cottage cheese also includes focus on a healthy diet like foods with high fiber, fruits and vegetables. People following the Budwig should strictly avoid processed foods, pork, sugar, refined grains, shellfish, dairy products, refined and hydrogenated oils, tea and coffee.

This diet must be avoided by people Dairy intolerance, pregnant and lactating mothers, people on pain relievers and drugs for blood related disorders. A lot of intake of water is advised while following this diet to prevent the risk of bowel obstruction.

** Please consult a doctor before implementing Budwig Diet.
